Barb Unger wrote "infor mation about the Stanley family came from submitted notes to the Fillmore City Historical society. The information was corrected slightly in 2000 from the LD S records."
Other Sources contained in this record are varied and many. LDS (Chuch of Jesus
Christ of Later Day Saints)is a source, for some, and those c an be identified when the Notes section has a symbol such as (AFN:RDPC-CJ). BIRTH DATE; I did find a record showing his birth date as 1640, however most indications are that 1629-30 is more accurate. (I now raeacognize Gloria Stanley Konkioff findings of Matthew's birth in 1629 to be accurate.)
A FATHER FOR MATTHEW? The LDS records has Matthew Stanley (AFN:RKPC-CJ), born 1640 at Topsfield, MA, as the son of John Stanley and Sarah Scott. This informa tion was submitted by Glenda Lloyd, 6233 N Elm, Mesa, AZ, 85201, submission AF9 2-100094, and Nancy Ruth Waldo Clement, 9 Collier Street, St Catherines,ONT, C anada L2P2R9,submission: AF96-113866.
I accepted this information, and then wa s challenged by Roy M Stanley,122 West River Bend Road, Fredericksburg, VA, 224 07, phone 540-786-5038.
I wrote to the two submitters and asked them for their source on the John - Matthew. Glenda Lloyd (glendaven@juno.com) replied and s he stated that she "did not have any parents for Matthew b 1630." She further stated "I submitted his name to the LDS Ancestor File as part of genealogical r esearch done by my mother, now deceased. I did not research the records. She gives her refeence for the data: Genealogy of New England, by Cutter, Vol 2-3 s eries."
Roy M Stanley (not to the best of my knowledge a relative of ours, I b elieve he is a descendant of John).
Unless evidence surfaces that disputes Roy M, I have deleted John from my records, and any reference that you may find to him there in, you should investigate very carefully before including him in yo ur ancestors. If you do find such evidence please let me know.

Regaarding the origins of Matthew, there are several idea s that Matthew is related to the Hartford Stanleys (which seems unlikely). Pos sibly he was indentured (hired out) at about 16 which was fitting for the times that Matthew of Topsfield & George of Beverly are related to Christopher of Bo ston who d. in 1646. Mathu Standly Estate whoe departed this Life ye 30th Apriell 1686 and subscribed by me on ye 29 day of May 1686 " (Mis statement from the Inventory of his estate, which gives his accurate death date.) Matthews Will was written "24th of February"
This is the Last Will and testament of Matthu Standly being in ye sane memory.
First, I doe give and bequeath my Soule unto Ye hands of my mercyfull redermmer and Saviour Ye Lord Jesus Christ, and my body to bee deasntly buried and to Ye Charge of my ffunerall to bee discharged and all my lawful debts to bee paid Viz:
Item I give to my son Samuel Standly all that peice of Land, one ye north Sid of Ye Cartway betweene Ye fencs and John Gould Land Provided that hee, Ye Sd Samuel Standly dos from time to time and at all times maintaine a Satisfactre Cart bridge over the Swamp to John Gould Land as I am bound to doe also that dos maintaine all Ye fences belong ing to that peice of Land as I have given him as I am bound to doe by Covenant.

MATTHEW STANLEY.
He was of Lynn, Mass., in 1646, where it is recorded of him, in Mass. Hist. Coll., as follows: "Matthew Stanley was fined ś5, with 2s. 6d cost, for winning the affections of John Tarbox his daughter without her parents' consent. The latter were allowed 6s for their attendance in court for 3 days." Samuel Stanley, a son of Matthew, born in 1656, was of Topsfield, Mass. He had eight children, of whom six sons went to Attleborough and settled near the Falls. One son, Benjamin, removed to Haverhill. From these have descended a large number of families residing in Eastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, and in later generations in New Hampshire and Maine, especially in the latter.

The dat a on Cindy's List has a 2nd wife for Matthew, Polly b. Abt 1770, md. Abt 1802 i n Turnbridge twp, Orange Co, VT. No children are shown for either of these marr iages. As thae 2nd marriage is after the birth of Archie, I believe Matthew an d Elizabeth's record to be correct.
This is from Stocker"s "Centennial Histo ry of Susquehanna County" 1887
page 472: "In 1814, Matthew Stanley locat ed at what was later called "Ellerslie" making some improvements there, but soo n after came to what is now (1887) known as Stanley's Pond, where he died in 18 38, aged seventy two years. His sons, who came with him, were Calvin, Luther, Jasper, Captain Stephen Heriman, Archy, Horace, Jason and Matthew. Luther Stan ley was in the War of 1812. Jasper remained on the homestead until his death, in 1884, and his sons Matthew and David still remain as representatives of this once numerous family.
Page 475: Another township was set off from Choco nut, Apolocan, and this was done prior to the taxable list of 1848 for Choconut where the following Stanley's appeared for Choconut Twp; Archy, John, Luther, and Orville.
Ellerslie was on a ridge dividing the townships of Choconut and Apolocon, when the latter township was established there. In 1929 a post offic e was established there. 1847 Jasper Stanley was postmaster, and in 1855 Jane Stanley served as postmistress. The post office was discontinued at the end of 1856.
Stocker's also notes that, under Forest Lake Township, "Soon after the settlement of
the Friends a Meeting was established near Friendsville....A frame meeting house was
built south of Choconut Lake, and a part of the lot on which it stands was
concecrated to the dead. In this peaceful ground reposed many of those who left
homes of comfort in older countries to battle with the hardships of the lives which
awaited the pioneers of this section. In 1830, the meeting consisted of only about
10 families, and, incosequence of a division occuring between the Orthodox and
Hicksite members, it was broken up. Most of the Orthodox members left soon after,
and it was not until the arrival of new members that the meetings were again
resumed. In 1839 the Monthly Meeting had 62 members, but many removal took place in
the course of a few years, and, in 1849, The Meeting was again discontinued, not to
again be revived. ...
Some of the younger members of Quaker families, remaining in this part of the
country, conected themselves with the Protestant Episcopal Church..."

Betsys"s obit has been found! In Filmore City, there is an obit stating her date of death an d that she died in Carimona. The cemetary is near her first home and there is is a large area open next to Amos's Grave. It seems reasonable that she is bur ied next to him. She appears to be living with her son Frank after her husband dies.

Sarah Augusta Day went by Augusta is seems. In her obit, it states that she awith her family to Carimona. Once she married, they lived in the first holme in Forestville. They appear to have been there aroun d 5 years before they moved to Elba. I am not sure how long they lived there u ntil they moved to St Charles, MN.

George's obit states he was born in Rockingham City V A. No source for parents name. He was city treasure in Elba and reportedly wo rked in mills. Both his and his wife obit refer to 3 dtrs and 3 sons, yet ther e is a William Tate on the census of 1870. This would mean 4 sons, George, Fre d, Frank Day Tate and Frank H. Tate who died in 1870 at age 5. Question who Wi lliam is.
There is a large familly in Rockingham, 1830. Several family of M atthew Tate lived there. Mathew has a son Roady, Joseph, Mathew and
Bernard Hall family in 1850 at age 20. Have always assumed he is our George W. Family story that 2 brothers left for Ohio together. GW obit states he went from VA to OH and onto into Illinois. He is not on the 1857 census of MN, but is in the 2860 census living with Autusta's family.

Frank shows up in family census in MN and then in the Perkins SD census of 1920 with a dtr and 2 sons and is a widow . Interestingly, his fathe George W. is listed as being born in West Virginin not VA. His mother is listed as born in NY.
Frank's children were born in S D (1905), MN (1906) and MN (1908). His brother's son Glenn Elsmere died in 190 6, and that might be why his second child, a dtr was born in MN (home for funer al).His last child is born in 1908, and is named Glen Franklin Tate, perhaps fo r his nephew and his uncle Franklin Day.

Freelan resided at Mechanic Falls, Lewston, ME, Newton, MA and Estes Park in Co. where he built the Stanley Hotel.

Francis and his twin brother Freelan formed the Stanley Dry Plate Company in 1883 to manufacture dry plates for the photographic process invented by Francis. They sold the company to Eastman Kodak in 1905, as their interest had turned to steam-powered automobiles. They had invented the Stanley Steamer in 1896, the first steam motorcar in New England, and formed the Stanley Motor Company to manufacture them. Francis served as president of the firm. The pair actively competed in auto races, pitting their steam power against gasoline-fueled engines and often winning. Using one of their steam cars, they set a world record in 1906 for fastest mile, 28.2 seconds (or 127 mph [205 kph]). The brothers sold the business in 1918, having manufactured more than 10,000 “Steamers.” Francis died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident that same year.
